Sharks are not monsters, they just need better PR
I love finding creative ways to help people move from fear to fascination when it comes to sharks. I do this in a number of ways including through adventure-style non-fiction books for both children and adults that are authentic and science-driven. I also design curriculum and activities that inspire curiosity and help students connect with ocean sciences in a fun and engaging way. Lastly, I love to combine my love of theatre and the performing arts to both direct, produce and host thought-provoking work both on stage and on screen.
I’m on a mission to protect our oceans in an equitable way where everyone feels represented
The ocean is a huge part of our lives whether we see it everyday or not. The world’s economy and the health of people everywhere relies on the ocean. But our ocean is in trouble and it will take all of us to set things right. Education and communication are a big part of what I do because we all need to be informed about what’s happening in our oceans. Social justice is another part of what I do because as we work to solve these ocean problems we must find solutions that work not just for one group of people, but for all of us. The benefits and burdens of ocean conservation should be shared equitably. Lastly, my research focuses on gaining the best possible information so we can make the best possible decisions based on the available data. I position my work at the intersection of science communication, social justice and research.
