Through real-world scenarios, small-group discussions, and guided reflection, attendees will practice applying these concepts to everyday professional situations—from meetings and fieldwork to hiring, mentorship, and collaboration. The workshop emphasizes actionable strategies participants can immediately use to foster more inclusive teams, support colleagues from marginalized backgrounds, and create environments where everyone can thrive.
Science Communication Workshop
In this interactive workshop, participants will explore how to effectively share science with diverse audiences in engaging and impactful ways. The session guides attendees through key elements of strong science communication, including identifying your unique voice, understanding and reaching your intended audience, and doing the background research needed to communicate responsibly and accurately.
Participants will also explore different communication mediums—from writing and photography to social media, public speaking, and creative storytelling—while learning how to think outside the box to make science more accessible and memorable. Through discussion and hands-on exercises, the workshop also emphasizes the importance of building supportive networks and collaborations that amplify your message and expand your reach.
Mentor Development Workshop
This interactive mentoring workshop introduces evidence-based mentoring practices adapted from the Entering Mentoring Program. Designed for educators, researchers, and professionals who support students and early-career scientists, the workshop focuses on building intentional, inclusive, and productive mentoring relationships.
Participants will explore core mentoring competencies including setting clear expectations, effective communication, fostering independence, addressing equity and inclusion in mentoring, and supporting mentees’ professional development. Through guided scenarios, reflective exercises, and group discussions, attendees will practice strategies for navigating common mentoring challenges and creating environments where mentees from all backgrounds can thrive.
Train the Trainer
This interactive workshop series takes the “Teach a man to fish” approach. In this series I train up to 20 people how to facilitate workshops centered around Equity and Justice. During the training you will get to experience each module, dive deeper into the practice of facilitating potentially charged conversations and gain practical experience through practice facilitation with other participants. This workshop also includes an evaluation of the first facilitation participants lead at their home organization. This is an excellent option for organizations that want to save money training facilitators to lead workshops internally on a regular basis.
